Antes de entrar en (mi) materia, Tallinn, para los que no la conozcan, es la capital de la República de Estonia y del condado de Harju. Pese a ser relativamente pequeña, con unos 400 mil habitantes, es la ciudad más poblada de Estonia y su principal puerto. Está situada en la costa norte del país, a orillas del golfo de Finlandia, a 80 km al sur de Helsinki.

Según Wiki, la ciudad surgió como un puerto comercial en la ruta marítima que unía Europa Occidental con Rusia y conoció su máximo apogeo como ciudad hanseática en plena Edad Media. Tras la independencia de Estonia en 1991 Tallin ha vuelto a resurgir principalmente por medio del turismo.

Como dato interesante, la ciudad tiene el numero mas grande de startups por persona en Europa y fue la ciudad que vio nacer a muchas compañías internacionales como Skype.

Before I begin our story in Tallinn, for those of you who don´t know, Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. It is situated on the northern coast of the country, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, 80 km (50 mi) south of Helsinki, east of Stockholm and west of Saint Petersburg in Harju County. From the 13th century until 1918 (and briefly during the Nazi occupation of Estonia from 1941 to 1944), the city was known as Reval.

Tallinn was founded in 1248, and due to its strategic location, the city became a major trade hub, especially from the 14th to the 16th century, when it grew in importance as part of the Hanseatic League.

One interesting fact, the city has the highest number of startups per person in Europe and is a birthplace of many international companies, including Skype.

Por lo que a nuestra aventura se refiere, sin esperar mucho de la ciudad y con poca investigación hecha, nos dejamos llevar por consejos locales, amigos y algún blog con su correspondiente ranking de «las 10 mejores cosas que hacer en Tallinn».
Y pese a que suene a combinación barata de turista de chancleta y calcetín la cosa funcionó. Al menos nos ayudó a perdernos por diferentes distritos. Zonas viejas que sabían a nuevas y calles y rincones que insinuaban que no debíamos merodear por allí pero que nos invitaban a pasar y descubrir más.
Como tal les correspondimos retratando todo lo que nos ofrecieron.

Y después de dos días, Tallinn resultó siendo una ciudad que posó para nosotros amablemente y con cierto descaro. Con sol, nubes, nieve o bajo la luna acabamos conectando.

With regards to our final chapter, we arrived with little expectation of the city and with almost no investigation undertaken, we decided to follow the local flow, friends’ advice as well as the standard «The 10 things to do in Tallinn» blog posts. I know the sound of that stinks like low cost tourist type, but ended up working pretty well. At least it helped us to get around and discover all the trendy new quarters or old districts. Gaunt hoods that smelled like rising ones or lost streets whispering we should not be there but at the same time inviting us to discover more. We couldn’t but just respond politely capturing everything the city had to show us.

After two days, we discovered the friendly side of the city which posed for us a certain cheeky touch. In the sun, cloudy, over the snow or under the moon we ended up connecting very well.

 

A buen ritmo, durante esos dos días descubrimos las nuevas zonas de Kalamaja (o casa de pescador en Estonio) y dentro de ella Telliskivi. La primera, llena de nuevos cafes, bares y galerías que consiguieron transformar el antiguo complejo industrial histórico haciendo de ella aparentemente el area con más rápido crecimiento de Tallinn alojando las mentes más jóvenes y creativas de la ciudad.
Dentro de Kalamaja encontramos Telliskivi (a veces llamada la histperville de Tallinn), que una vez estuvo separada como parte de la frontera Soviética, y que encuentra convenientemente localizada entre la escénica costa de Tallinn y el «old town» escondiendo algunas pequeñas gemas de la arquitectura. También es el centro neurálgico de Kalamaja con sus tantos restaurantes y su calle «indoors» llena de tiendas en las que encontraras desde cosméticos hasta piezas de diseño Estonio.

Cerca de estas dos gemas, también encontramos el museo (marítimo) más grande y cool de Estonia llamado Seaplane, así como también la infame prisión Patarei, ahora abandonada como estampa del oscuro pasado de la ocupación Sovietica.

At a decent pace, over those days we discovered the new areas of Kalamaja (or fisherman house in Estonian) and within there Telliskivi. The former full of new cafes, bars and galleries have transformed the former industrial complexes of the historical wooden townhouse district, making it the fastest developing area of Tallinn attracting creatives and those young at heart.
Inside Kalamaja we found Telliskivi, often called the “hipsterville” of Tallinn, this once closed off Soviet border zone is conveniently located between the scenic Tallinn coast and Old Town and hides some real architectural gems.

Telliskivi is the hub of Kalamaja with its many restaurants, theatres and an indoor shopping street selling everything from organic cosmetics to Estonian design. Nearby you’ll find Estonia’s largest and coolest maritime museum Seaplane Harbour as well as the once infamous Patarei sea fortress and prison, peeking into the dark history of the past Soviet occupation.

Antes de tocar retirada, acabamos perdiéndonos por el barrio viejo u «old town» situado a tiro de piedra del apartamento, dejando nuestra marca también en la parte más turística de la ciudad.

Y así concluyó una semana intensa, fría y tal vez porque esperamos poco del viaje, pero debo admitir que también sorprendente.

Before calling it a day, we finished off wandering around the city´s old town also leaving our mark in what is probably the most touristy area of the city.

And so it concluded. A very intense, cold and I must admit (perhaps because we did expect very little from the trip), also surprising.
